Getting Real With Myself
GOALS 2010
Every year we
are encouraged to write out a list of resolutions before January and then work really hard to accomplish them all before the year ends!
Just the thought of setting all this work into motion makes most of us cringe! Yikes!
We all may have good intentions but a lot of us feel defeated before we even get started! And why??? Well, whether we want to admit it or not I believe the main reason is that little big word called, COMMITMENT.
Dictionary.com defines commitment;the state of being bound emotionally or intellectually to a course of action or to another person or persons;pledging, or engaging oneself.
Some remarks I have heard from people over the years when asked if they have made any resolutions for the New Year;
- “Whatever I decide to list as important for my well being I really feel deep down inside that I will fail so why even bother!”
- “I can’t find the time!”
- “This just means MORE work I will have to add to my already hectic schedule and what I really need is a REST!!!”
I believe what we all really need is time/stress management with a positive support system in order to commit to realistic goals.
For several years now I have changed my way of thinking when setting myself up for any new challenge. Whether it has to do with Health, Fitness, Finances or Relationships, instead of using the term, “resolutions”, I came up with the term;
“SETTING A GOAL WITH OPPORTUNITIES TO SERVE”
By focusing on this statement I am able to see the challenge before me as a service (serving of God by obedience, sacrifice, etc), sharing with others, instead of just a duty to myself.
This mindset of support has successfully brought me great personal gain.
Once setting a goal (not a resolution; ie; weight loss, getting out of dept, strengthening relationships, etc.), the power of a “buddy system” will become tremendously effective! Whether the support is a close friend you buddy up with to stay accountable to or going to an individual or group that holds you accountable with weekly visits, you will find that state of frenzy and negativity will most certainly be replaced with positive high energies followed by great accomplishments and rewards.
At the top of my list today, along with my goals for healthy weight loss, I am “setting a goal with opportunity to serve” by becoming debt free by age 60. This is a long-term goal I have been working on for the past couple of years. For me this is a realistic goal. I have a terrific buddy system that keeps me accountable so now all I have to do is continue to commit by setting short and long term goals.
This means in the next four years I will have walked through many more opportunities of service. By my continued commitment to be debt free by age 60 I will have the financial freedom to serve in other areas that are also dear to my heart.
I challenge you today as well, to search your heart and choose what your most valuable asset is to work on NOW! and MOVE! toward a plan with a buddy system to help you set goals with opportunities to serve.
What is holding you back from taking that first step? What is causing you doubt? Whom do you trust to help you be accountable and get the plan growing? Resources are at your fingertips!
In the weeks to come I will be sharing how; “Setting a Goal With Opportunities To Serve”, is helping me to overcome certain fears in my life in order to get to the goal line I have set to accomplish.
I will also be sharing what I have learned over the years from those I have counseled and walked with to those that have been my most respected mentors. My hope and prayer is that you will find this blog helpful along your journey to a healthier you.
Moving Onward!
